If you look at the table above, you may notice that Naturepedic wins in some areas while Newton wins in others. It may be hard to make a quick decision based on what you see above, but we can help you come to a final conclusion with our simple scoring system with justification in the sections to follow.

Key Differences

Organic

With the added benefit of being chemical and toxin-free, an Organic mattress is very important for good health and sound sleep.

Naturepedic is certified by multiple authorities for being 100% organic. This is one of their key marketing points and it’s very important. They use the purest form of U.S certified organic cotton in their filling.

Newton on the other hand claim that it’s healthier and safer than organic mattresses. They have 100% organic cotton mattress covers but the mattresses are made of food-grade polymer mixed with crystal clear water.

The mattresses are free from toxins, foam, and latex with zero chemical emissions. Even though it’s not 100% organic like NaturePedic, it’s still Green Gold certified making it one of the safest mattresses on the market.

Breathable

A breathable mattress is extremely important when it comes to infants and toddlers. Even when it comes to adults, a breathable mattress goes a long way when it comes to long-term health and sleep comfort.

A breathable mattress is designed and built to allow air to flow through the mattress. In a scenario where babies sleep on their bellies with their faces buried inside the mattress, you wouldn’t have to worry much since they can still breathe through. The airflow also the heat released through the mattress to keep the baby cool and relaxed without suffocating with sweat and discomfort.

Newton mattresses by default are all breathable thanks to the WovenAire technology used to build the mattress. Naturepedic on the other hand has the option to choose breathable, breathable ultra or classic mattresses.

The NaturePedic classic mattress is not specified as breathable, but you can choose the “InnerSpring coil” build if you want to get some breathable benefit out of this mattress type.

Waterproof

Having a waterproof mattress is quite beneficial and speaks for itself.

All Naturepedic mattresses come with a pure layer of waterproof coating making it easy to simply wipe off anything on it. This is quite useful and convenient when compared to standard crib mattresses in the market which require a waterproof protector pad for the same purpose.

All Newton Mattresses come with a water-resistant cover. It’s not waterproof but they do not stay on the cover so these can be easily machine washed. Of the 3 types of mattresses to choose from, only one is waterproof.

The waterproof lining is on the toddler side of the 2-stage mattress – not on the infant side. In order to have a fully waterproof mattress for infants, you have to get a breathable waterproof mattress pad – which can also be purchased from Newton if required.

Washable

There is a lot going on with a crib mattress when compared with an adult mattress. Baby poop, urine, vomit, and more stains than our compulsive mind can comprehend. Keeping the mattress clean is of utmost importance to ensure the baby’s health and safety.

Naturepedic Breathable and Ultra mattresses come with a removable cover that can be machine washed, but the Naturepedic Classic mattress only comes with a wipe-clean waterproof surface. You can get a washable waterproof cover for the Classic mattress but that wouldn’t make sense. The added cost of the cover could be used to go for the Breathable / Breathable Ultra option.

Newton has the advantage in this area. Their unique build technology allows you to wash the entire mattress without any worries. For parents who have a problem with stains and dirt, this would be the go-to choice for a clean and fresh mattress after every wash.

2 Stage Option

A 2 stage mattress is a value for money especially considering the price point of crib mattresses (specifically the good organic ones). With a 2 stage mattress, you get a hard side and a cushy side. The hard side is for infants – this side will be used for a year or two as per the recommendation. The cushy side is for toddlers, who can now enjoy more plush and comfort while sleeping.

Naturepedic mattresses have different build structures on 2-stage mattresses. A soft cushy side for toddlers and a hard side for infants. Naturepedic breathable and ultra-breathable mattresses come with a 2-stage build by default. In the Classic option, you can choose with or without a 2-stage construct.

Newton mattresses are built quite differently. Their mattress with WaveForm technology has a firm side for infants and a plush comfortable side for toddlers.

Build & Weight

There are two factors to consider when it comes to the weight of a crib mattress.

  1. Build quality
  2. Easy to lift and clean

Foam-based mattresses tend to be lightweight while spring mattresses tend to be on the heavy side. Spring mattresses are heavy and tend to be more durable, but both Newton and Naturepedic have lightweight mattresses built with technology different from a normal foam mattress.

Heavy spring mattresses tend to be strong and more durable. It makes you feel safe when your baby rests on a heavy mattress knowing there is little to zero risk of SIDS.

Baby mattresses require more cleaning than an adult mattress. In such a situation, a lightweight mattress makes the parent’s life much easier. Light mattresses are easy to lift for the purpose of cleaning and maintenance. Heavy mattresses can take a toll on your back.

Naturepedic crib mattresses provide you the option to go with an innerspring mattress with 150+ coils (heavy) or a lightweight mattress made with Naturepedice waveform technology. Both build types are firm enough for the baby to avoid the risk of SIDs whilst allowing breathability.

Newton WovenAire Core

Newton mattress has no such option. Their build is made with WovenAire technology which appears to have a spring-like construction but without the use of Spring or Foam. It’s unique, almost organic, very breathable, and lightweight.

Certifications

Certifications are the level of effort a company goes through to prove to their customers how serious they are about the quality of their products and the principles they stand by.

Both Newton and Naturepedic are Greenguard Gold certified, which means both brands have absolutely little to no chemical emissions from the mattresses which is an excellent proof to have.

Naturepedic goes further with multiple certifications from many sources such as CertifiedVega, PETA, GOTL, GOLS, SFC Gold, and more to prove that it’s 100% organic in every component of the mattress.

Naturepedic – 1
Newton – 0.5

Price Point

Pricing is the final factor that will help you make a sound decision without breaking the bank.

Naturepedic mattresses would be on the high range of the pricing scale when compared to the other crib mattresses in the market, including Newton – but they deserve it for putting the amount of effort that goes into maintaining 100% organic certified 2-stage mattresses with a waterproof coating.

Newton crib mattresses are not cheap but they could be considered average on the pricing scale when compared to other crib mattresses in the market. They are crib mattresses from popular brands for half the price but they do not provide half the benefits highlighted above, importantly the part of being washable – organic and breathable with the option to flip side for long-term use by toddlers.

Naturepedic – 0.5
Newton – 1

Conclusion

Let’s take a look at the final score:

Newton – 6.5

Naturepedic – 7

The scoring points seem quite fair and obvious in our opinion. As the scoring suggests, Newton is an excellent choice, but Naturepedic scores a bit better. If budget was of no concern for you, Naturepedic Breathable Ultra in our honest opinion would be the best choice for a baby crib mattress when compared to Newton.

Newton still stands its ground rock-solid and we would recommend the Newton Original / Waterproof for any parent who wants a safe, long-lasting, and healthy mattress for their baby for years to come.
